Natural tooth whitening. Does oil pulling work?

I was delighted to read a recent article about Alicia Keys and her #nomakeup position. As someone who is a belly dancer that wears make up and blogs about make up that may seem strange. I love make up but there is a time and place for it. The thing is, there is a lot of pressure on women to be something else, not just on stage, but all the time. I can relate to her comments about wearing masks and hiding. There was a time in my life when my skin was often red and angry and I never left the house without a full face of make-up. Thankfully after many years of work with natural therapies and deeper self-development that problem  passed. I now feel I have a healthier relationship to myself. I can accept and love how I look without make up and do the same with it.  So despite me vowing to publish all the half written make up reviews I have been accumulating on my computer I will jump this piece forward. This is about trialling oil pulling as a tooth whitener – something natural, easy to do, cheap and looks good, with or without make up.

When I first heard about oil pulling, I was like “Yuck, seriously?”.

One way to pose if you want to draw attention away from your teeth!

After I heard it mentioned many times, I decided to look into it a bit. From the numerous websites and forums I looked at, oil pulling has been claimed to cure everything from ingrown hairs to arthritis. I can’t attest to its curative abilities but the one thing everyone agreed on was it does make your teeth whiter so I decided to try it. It was super cheap compared with the $400 chemical shit storm the dentist offered to whiten my teeth.

So what is OIL PULLING?

It is putting a spoonful of oil in your mouth and swishing it for about 20mins or so and spitting it out.

It is said to draw out toxins (hence its claimed healing benefits). It may or may not help with health issues but in accordance with what every one else said online, it did make my teeth whiter. You do this on a daily basis for 2 weeks. I was a bit sporadic with it so my results were not as strong as my son’s. He tried it and was much more disciplined and his teeth became super white, my daughter tried it too and it temporary fixed an enamel discolouration she has on one tooth (it stayed white for many months and goes white again when she does the oil pulling, her dentist was impressed with the results).

What oil do you use?

Well the first articles I read about it in years ago recommended organic sunflower oil which I tried and did not really like. The next site said sesame oil was the ancient way, so I tried that too. I preferred the taste but it was strong. The oil of choice for most modern oil pullers is organic coconut oil. This was the best flavour in my opinion. If yours is solid just scrape out a spoonful, it melts really quickly in your mouth.

What is it like?

I won’t lie to you, I don’t like the texture of that oil in my mouth. It took me many attempts before I could tolerate it for the full-time frame but you do get used to it and some people don’t mind it at all.

Results

Whiter teeth! It really worked for me, my friends and family. Some people do it in the shower (just remember to not spit it into your drains), some while reading, doing yoga or meditating.

Everyone is crazy about coconut oil in Australia these days and you can buy this stuff at woolworths, coles, go-vita and probably any health food shop you go to. For locals – it is also stocked in Kombu in Bellingen.

I would love to hear form my overseas readers if organic coconut oil is easily available where you live too.

Natural Make up Review: Inika Liquid Foundation

Inika Liquid Foundation

I have been so enjoying my Inika products that I thought I should review another. As mineral powder blush is all the rage in natural make up lines, I thought I would try out a liquid foundation for a bit of contrast. As it is also a certified organic product, with 76% of ingredients certified organic, I just found it too hard to resist. Liquid foundations are often a good choice for those with drier skin types or older skin. I sampled both Cream and Beige and while both were ok for my complexion I decided on Beige.Inika_logo_black

Packaging

Something I really like is that you can buy small sample tubes of the colours so you can see which one works before forking out the money for the full size bottle. The postage involved in doing this is somewhat offset by the discount they give you if you go on to purchase the product ( I think it was $5 or $10 dollars from memory). Also, the little tubes are great for travelling!

The full sized product comes in a black pump bottle in 30ml (1.01oz). It is easy to use and hasn’t leaked despite me taking it make up bags and on planes. The gold writing at the back started to fade after regular use although strangely the front didn’t!Natural make up for dancers

Wearability

Like with the Inika Organic Crème Eye Shadow in Champagne I previously reviewed I preferred to use my fingers to apply this product to my face. It provides moderate coverage of imperfections and looks quite natural on. It can leave a slight residue in creases but not every time so perhaps I just have applied it a little bit thick on occasion.

Overall I am deeply impressed with this product.

It withstood the ultimate test!

48 hrs of solid travel with around 20 of those hours on a plane with the ultra skin drying air conditioning.

I came off the plane actually looking OK! It’s never happened before and is partly due to the fact that I uncharacteristically got a few hours sleep but the make up held up. I didn’t think to remove the make up and reapply. I was just trying to endure the torture of long haul travel. I did touch it up a bit in the last few hours on the last flight but it barely needed doing. My skin was not dry and flaking by the end and even better was not irritated by the fact I had worn my foundation for 2 days straight. Seriously, what more can you ask for?

Would it work for stage? Yes. I have worn it in performance and it was fine. I did add a finishing powder but after my aero plane experience I doubt it is necessary. It’s lasting power makes it a good choice however it may not be thick enough to cover serious skin issues or heavy lighting but for most performance works well.

Safety

This product is already reviewed by the EWG data base, however I think the rating is unfairly high. It ranks it overall as moderately toxic (4)mostly because of the grape fruit seed oil that it ranks as a 6 in safety. This is quite crazy. For one, there isn’t any listed in the ingredients online and secondly because organic grapefruit seed oil is not likely to be contaminated. That was the main warning mentioned -the potential for contamination of the ingredients, but organic production reduces the chances of this significantly so the warning and ratings seem high to me. On investigation of the ingredients myself, I believe it should have a low toxicity rating.

Powder based make-up drying out your skin? Natural make-up review of Inika Crème Colour

Inika Certified Organic Crème Colour

A creamy blush or lip tint.

Apart from the fallout  (that’s when the powder product from say your eye shadow ends up on your cheeks by mistake) I have mentioned with several products, there is another reason some of my readers and students have told me they prefer using non powder based make up products and that is because of drying out the skin.

If you have drier skin, serious fallout issues or simply want a high quality certified organic blush then read on for the details of the 2 colours I tried out for this review – Rosehip and Dusty Rose.

As always if you don’t want to read the details, just scroll down to the summary at the bottom for the review in a nutshell.

Packaging

The creme colour blush comes in the usual trendy little signature Inika box. Inside is the circular hinged, snap lid container with 2g of product (0.07oz). I have purposely dropped the containers from bench height several times and have shaken them up inside a make up bag to see if the lids would pop open but they remained firmly shut. Plus they are super easy to open. It’s hard to find a product that is both quick to use but travel safe but Inika has pulled it off here. YAY! I also like the clear viewing window so that you can see what colour you are holding without opening it – overall the packaging is super practical and convenient to use. I would give it 10 stars out of 5 if I could.Inika_logo_black

Wearability

Like with the Inika Organic Crème Eye Shadow in Champagne I previously reviewed I preferred to use my fingers to apply these products to my cheeks but a cotton bud served well when trying it as a lip tint.rosehip_creme_colour_swatch

Rosehip – a vibrant red for a more dramatic look and suitable for night or stage use. It was easy to apply and blend into the cheeks. Love it.

Dusty Rose is …well exactly the colour I would call Dusty Rose! A nice soft pinkish hue that goes nicely with a day time look, it would be a bit subtle for most stage uses. Unfortunately this product was of thicker consistency than the Rosehip and created a bit of unwanted drag on the skin when applying it.dusty_rose_swatch

The colour lasted easily all day for both shades.

I actually liked trialling them both as lip tints. They are not stage worthy but fine for everyday use, probably not as tasty as the average lip formulated product though. It tasted a bit of lanolin even though that is not one of the ingredients – I think it is just the flavour of the almond oil. I probably wouldn’t buy them exclusively as a lip tint but if you want a high quality product that can do double duty (like say when you are travelling to cut down on the weight of your make up bag) then these products would be just what you are after.

Both colours have a Matte finish.

Safety

As this product is not already reviewed by the EWG data base, I entered every ingredient by hand. All ingredients are considered either completely non toxic (ie Sweet almond oil. Carnuba wax and Soyean Oil) or of low toxicity.

It’s also certified organic, which means you are not getting things like pesticide residue as a nasty little hidden bonus. Yipee!
